Serbia will file his candidacy Tuesday for entering the European Union

Boris Tadic will visit Tuesday, December 22 in Stockholm to submit the candidacy of his country to the European Union, confirmed Monday, December 21 the Serbian presidency. This decision, which came after several weeks of rapprochement between Belgrade and the EU, has been hailed by the Swedish Prime Minister who welcomed Serbia 'has taken an historic step by deciding to stand'. In early December the twenty-seven member states of the EU have agreed to the implementation, long blocked an agreement on free trade between the EU and Belgrade. Serbian citizens are also allowed since Saturday, when holding a biometric passport to travel within the Schengen area of free movement of persons, which includes the majority of EU countries.

A deposit of application to the EU Presidency is the first step for a country aspiring to EU. Serbia is the latest country, from the former Yugoslavia, to present his candidacy to the EU. Slovenia is part of the EU since 2004, Croatia is well advanced in the accession negotiations and hopes to join in 2011, Macedonia has applied since December 2005 but stalled for opening accession negotiations, Montenegro deposited his candidacy in December 2008.

Bosnia mired in an impasse institutional lags, like Kosovo, where Serbia is challenging the declaration of independence before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The proclamation of independence by Pristina authorities have been recognized so far by 64 countries worldwide, including 22 of the 27 EU states. Albania has submitted its candidacy for EU membership in April.
